Literary Devises and Techniques

Character: the individuals who take part in the story.

 Main character: The most important characters which the events revolve around. Protagonist: The enemy/ problem of the main character.

Minor character: Less prominent character.

Dynamic character: Characters who change throughout the story.

Static character: Character who remains the same.

Setting: The location and time in which the story takes place.

Plot: Chain of relative events that move the story.

Exposition: Lays the groundwork for the plot and provides the readers with essential background info.

Inciting Incident: Incident that begins the major plot of the story.

Rising Action: Complications that arise that challenge the main character.

Climax: The turning point of the action, usually involves an important event.

Falling Action: Events after the climax; often the when the conflict is resolved.

Denouement (Resolution): The part in the story where everything is made right; the resolution.  

Theme: The main subject/ artistic expression of the story.
