“An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge ” Question 4

Considering the outcome of the story, what is ironic or surprising about Farquhar’s longing for the “larger life of a soldier?” What is ironic about the fact that Farquhar agrees with the saying that “all is fair in love and war?”  It is ironic that Farquhar is longing for the “larger life of a soldier” because at the end of the story you find that his adventure resulted in his death. Farquhar’s belief in “all is fair in love and war” is ironic because in the end of the story he sees his wife, that he loves, but he is then instantly a victim of war (his neck suddenly breaks).
